Interesting Facts About Muhammad (PBUH)

In this article, we hope to make known some very interesting facts about the Islamic Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) which are proven by authentic Hadith. These facts aim to reflect his character, daily routines and his prosperity before and after Prophethood.

• He was a descendant of the Prophet Ismail (Ishmael) the son of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) (PBUT)
• His character was respected by all. People throughout Medina (in Arabia) including the Jews gave him the name of “The Trustworthy”
• His first marriage was to a widow woman called Khadijah, who proposed to him. He was 25 years old and she was 40 years old. They were happily married for 25 years. It was only after her passing, when he married again
• Before Prophethood, he used to retreat to a cave up on the mountain Hira, where he used to meditate
• He and the early Muslims used to pray towards Jerusalem, until being told by Allah (Swt) to turn towards the Kaaba in Makkah (Revelation present in the Quran)
• His companions and followers memorised the Quran wholeheartedly as he recited them
• During Prophethood, he and his companions and followers were subject to much mental and physical abuse
• He was subject to assassination attempts
• He never ate alone. He invited others and then ate with them
• He encouraged the washing of hands before and after eating food
• He regularly visited the poor and ill
• Upon visiting a person, he used to greet them and then take their permission before entering the house and encourage others to do the same as a mark of respect
• He used to mend his clothes, repair his shoes and sweep the floor as well as do the household shopping (even during his married life)
• He used to preach to people, but avoided preaching to excess to avoid annoying people
• He sometimes prayed so much his legs swelled. In one incident, he was asked why he offered such an unbearable prayer and he replied with “Shall I not be a thankful slave (to Allah)?”
• He did not care if anyone interrupted him during a sermon, but helped them in their matters or worries before returning to his sermon
• He did not care about where he slept. Sometimes he slept on a skin, and even the floor
• He sent letters to Kings and leaders beyond Arabia inviting them to Islam
• During the conquest of Makkah, the Muslims passed a female dog with puppies. Muhammad (PBUH) not only gave orders that they were not to be disturbed, but he assigned a man to see this was done
• The Jews at the time were so impressed with his sense of justice that some came to him to solve cases, in which Muhammad (PBUH) decided them according to their own Jewish Law
• His Prophethood lasted for a long period of 23 years, during which he received Revelations from Allah (Swt)
• He never proclaimed himself as anyone or anything Divine
• His brother-in-law named Amr Ibn Al-Harith, said that one of the things he left behind when he passed away was a piece of land which he had dedicated for the good of the community
• His name is now one of the most popular names in the world
